FUNCTION:The Curator of Manuscripts directs the overall
developmental program of manuscripts, prints and photographs,
research materials and other items (scrapbooks, albums, artifacts,
etc.) acquired with manuscripts and archival collections in the
Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Responsible for supervising, orienting, and training the
Manuscripts Librarian, the Prints and Photographs Librarian and
assigning and reviewing their work. Supervises library student
assistants who work in the Manuscript Division.NATURE AND
SCOPE:Internal contacts include students, staff, faculty, and
administrators. External contacts include vendors, local firms,
agencies and external libraries, consortium students, visiting
scholars, and the general public.PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Provides leadership, direction, and planning for the Manuscript
Division, the Prints and Photograph Department with the assistance
of the Manuscripts Librarian(s).
- Identifies the role and the relationship of manuscripts, music,
prints and photographs, and oral history to other resources within
the Moorland -Spingarn Research Center.
- Establishes the scope and content of materials to be included
in the various collections of the Manuscript Division; serves as
the lead evaluator for potential donations; works in consultation
with the Executive Director and the Office of the General
Counsel.
- Develops and implements procedures relating to the training of
staff (via manuals, training sessions, etc.).
- Maintains and supervises the organization, processing, and
retrieval of manuscript, print and photographic, music and oral
history materials; maintains awareness of current library
technology having an impact on the organization and retrieval of
such materials.
- Maintains awareness of copyright and other legal provisions
that may limit or expand access and utilization.
- Collaborates with the Archives Division and the Digital
Production Center to identify and select materials for
digitization.
- Supervises creation of finding aids related to the various
resources.
- Coordinates relationships with similar research institutions as
they relate to the collections of the Manuscript Division.
- Uses manuscripts and photographs collections and works with the
Archives Division to create exhibits for the museum.
- Works with the Archives Division and the Digital Productions
Center to answer questions and process collections.
- Handles, lifts, or moves materials, boxed and unbound, as
necessary to support the operation of this position.CORE
COMPETENCIES:Broad academic background in various social sciences
and humanities, with a special emphasis in Africans and people of
African descent.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Master's degree from an ALA
accredited institution in Library and/or Information Science, and
or graduate degree in the social sciences, literature, archival
management, or other relevant field. Certified archivist
designation is preferred.
