Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, LDF's mission has been transformative - to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.LDF's litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education programs in criminal justice, economic justice, education, and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote, and a fair judicial system.The Thurgood Marshall InstituteIn 2015, LDF launched the Thurgood Marshall Institute (TMI), a collaborative hub that combines advocacy with LDF's traditional litigation strengths to advance racial justice. The Institute aims to enhance LDF's research and public education capacity through targeted advocacy and high-impact communications campaigns.The Education Equity Research Fellow will lead a two-year mixed methods research project exploring the intersection of race and traditional indicia of merit. The Research Fellow will collaborate with the TMI research team and LDF litigators, policy advocates, and organizers to develop recommendations addressing the role of traditional indicators of merit in maintaining racial inequality in higher education.LDF operates in a hybrid work environment where employees are expected to be in the office a minimum of two days per week, unless otherwise indicated.Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of a mixed methods research project, including securing IRB approval.
  • Conduct background and investigative research on indicia of merit in higher education.
  • Assist in project management.
  • Create TMI research publications, including reports and presentations on findings.
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external meetings and conferences.
  • Conduct outreach to regional, state, and local leaders around advocacy issues.
  • Organize materials for speaking engagements and assist in preparation of institutional statements.
  • Other duties as assigned.Qualifications:
    • Commitment to racial justice and the mission of LDF.
    • Doctoral degree in relevant fields such as education, social sciences, or critical ethnic studies.
    • Knowledge of the IRB review process.
    • Experience producing scholarly publications.
    • Experience designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative research.
